HYPOBARIC STORAGE OF TROPICAL FRUITS.

Author(s) : SPALDING D. H.

Summary

THE SUCCESSFUL USE OF LOW PRESSURE OR HYPOBARIC STORAGE FOR TROPICAL FRUITS DEPENDS ON THE CULTIVAR OF FRUIT, THE MATURITY AND CONDITION WHEN STORED, THE TEMPERATURE, HUMIDITY, AND ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE DURING STORAGE, AND THE TIME STORED. IN ADDITION, THE CLIMATE IN WHICH THE FRUIT WAS GROWN DETERMINES THE POTENTIAL FOR DEVELOPMENT OF DISEASE DURING MARKETING. THE STORAGE LIFE HAS SHOWN PROMISE AS AVOCADOS, BANANAS, LIMES, MANGOS, AND PAPAYAS, BUT DECAY CAN BE A SERIOUS PROBLEM. STORAGE AT A PRESSURE AS LOW AS 2,660 PASCALS HAS REDUCED DECAY IN TESTS WITH AVOCADOS AND PAPAYAS, BUT HAS NOT ELIMINATED DECAY PROBLEMS WITH MANGOS. IMPROVED FUNGICIDE TREATMENTS ARE NEEDED.
