File on Japan: 2002 imports of frozen vegetables were negatively impacted by the recession.

Dossier Japon : les importations 2002 de légumes surgelés affectés par la récession économique.

Type of article: Article

Summary

Japan began mass imports of frozen vegetables in the early 1990s, before it started large-scale imports of fresh vegetables. This trend was partly due to rising yen values which reduced the prices of imported goods, along with increasing numbers of restaurants and institutionally catered premises. Moreover, frozen foods are well-suited to the lifestyles of working young adults and couples. The Japanese are also increasingly equipped with spacious refrigerators with freezer compartments, and microwave ovens.
