Finned-tube evaporators re-design for new refrigerants, part 1: review of heat transfer and pressure drop correlations

Summary

This paper reviews the most commonly used correlations in the literature for heat transfer and pressure drop for finned-tube evaporators. On the refrigerant-side, the paper discusses the latest predictions models based on flow patterns. Also, a comparison between different refrigerants is presented as a proof of the importance of having the different behavior of heat transfer and pressure drop coefficients in mind to perform a correct design of heat exchangers. In a similar trend, modeling of the air-side of evaporators was discussed and a comparison of the most renowned correlations was presented based on the tube outer diameter. This work is the first part of a global vision on the correct dimensioning of finned-tube evaporators. In the second part a methodology for designing and optimizing finned-tube evaporators is presented based on the main conclusions of the current paper.
