Finned-tube evaporators re-design for new refrigerants, part 2: basic guidelines and optimization.

Summary

This work details a methodology in order to estimate the heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop of refrigerant- and air-side and their impacts on the evaporator design. From that point of view, the performance of finned-tube evaporators for different configurations and the evaluation of its design is done. As a probe of concept, different refrigerant circuitries are presented and compared. The main design considerations to optimize the operation of selected evaporator using R-290 as refrigerant are presented. Moreover, the propose evaporator was integrated in a complete air-to-water heat pump to investigate the effect of main air-side geometry parameters, such as spacing between rows and tubes, and fin pitch, on the heat pump’s global performance.
