Flow boiling in horizontal tubes: new results for R410A and R134a compared to R22.

Author(s) : WOJTAN L., THOME J. R.

Summary

This paper presents new flow boiling results for evaporation of R410A, R134a and R22 at the nominal saturation temperature of 5 °C for vapour qualities ranging from 3 to 99%, mass velocities from 70 to 500 kg/m2s and a wide range of heat flux using counter-current hot water heating. A performance comparison was made at a mass velocity of 300 kg/m2s in the heat flux range from 6-9 kW/m2. This showed nearly equal performance of R410A and R134a, which were about 10% higher than those of R22 and also compared well to the Kattan-Thome-Favrat flow pattern based flow boiling heat transfer model for horizontal tubes for flows in the intermittent and annular flow regimes, but less so for the more difficult to predict stratified-wavy flow regime.
