FLOW STUDIES DURING FORCED CONVECTION BOILING OF PURE REFRIGERANTS AND BINARY MIXTURES.

Summary

AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY WAS CONDUCTED TO INVESTIGATE THE FLOW REGIMES AND PRESSURE DROP CHARACTERISTICS DURING FORCED CONVECTION BOILING OF PURE R12 AND R22 AND OF BINARY MIXTURE OF R12 AND R22 IN A HORIZONTAL TUBE EVAPORATOR. FOR ALL COMPOSITIONS OF THE BINARY MIXTURES AS WELL AS THE PURE REFRIGERANTS, THE CHANGES OF FLOW PATTERNS WITH DIFFERENT MASS VELOCITIES AND VAPOUR QUALITIES WERE GENERALLY OF THE SAME NATURE. THE TRANSITION ZONES BETWEEN DIFFERENT FLOW REGIMES DID NOT SHOW GOOD AGREEMENT WITH THE PREDICTIONS OF BAKER MAP AND THE TRANSITION LINE TO ANNULAR FLOW DEVIATED WITH THE CHARGE COMPOSITION. IT WAS FOUND THAT THE PREDICTED PRESSURE DROPS COMPARED REASONABLY WELL IN THE LOW VAPOUR QUALITY REGION. IN GENERAL, THE METHOD OF MARTINELLI-NELSON UNDERPREDICTED THE PRESSURE DROPS, USUALLY BY 15 TO 50%.
