Summary

ISOLATED VENTRICLE STRIPS FROM THE FREEZE TOLERANT FROG, RANA SYLVATICA READILY SURVIVED AND REGAINED CONTRACTILITY AFTER FREEZING EXPOSURE IN VITRO WHEN INCUBATED IN A MEDIUM CONTAINING THE NATURAL CRYOPROTECTANT, GLUCOSE. VENTRICLE STRIPS FROM THE LEOPARD FROG, RANA PIPIENS, WERE NOT ONLY FREEZE INTOLERANT IN VITRO BUT RAPIDLY LOST CONTRACTILITY WHEN EXPOSED TO GLUCOSE AT LEVELS (250 MILLIM) TYPICAL OF CRYOPROTECTANT CONTENT IN R. SYLVATICA.
