FREEZING ECONOMY.

Author(s) : STROM A.

Summary

THIS PAPER DESCRIBES ALTERNATIVE METHODS TO ESTABLISH THE RELATIVE IMPORTANCE OF THE VARIOUS FACTORS AND ALSO GIVES SOME EXAMPLES COMPARING ALTERNATIVE FREEZING METHODS. ONE METHOD IS THE LIFE CYCLE ECONOMY (LCE) ANALYSIS, WHICH ESTABLISHES THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN HOW MUCH IT COSTS TO BUY, INSTALL AND OPERATE A UNIT COMPARED TO ITS EARNINGS DURING ITS TOTAL USEFUL LIFETIME. A COMPARISON IS MADE WITH THE MORE COMMONLY USED METHOD DEALING ONLY WITH THE ECONOMIC LIFETIME OF THE EQUIPMENT. AS FREEZERS IN GENERAL HAVE A FAR LONGER USEFUL LIFE THAN THE NORMAL DEPRECIATION PERIODS OF FOUR TO SEVEN YEARS, THE LCE METHOD EMPHASIZES FACTORS SUCH AS USEFUL LIFETIME, RELIABILITY, RUNNING COSTS AND YIELD LOSSES RATHER THAN INITIAL INVESTMENT COST. TWO EXAMPLES ARE SHOWN, ONE COMPARING RAW HAMBURGER FREEZING IN TWO MECHANICAL SPIRAL FREEZERS, THE OTHER COMPARING HIGH QUALITY MECHANICAL AND CO2 SPIRAL FREEZING OF CATFISH.
