Frozen fish in Spain: has growth started again?

Espagne : poisson congelé, retour de la croissance ?

Type of article: Article

Summary

Spanish frozen-food consumption had been dropping for several years but showed an upturn in 1998, with 1.2% growth and a consumption level of 300,000 tonnes. 1999 figures may well confirm this trend. This upturn is occurring within a context of rising sales of all types of fish. The most marked rise was observed in the "précocinados" (precooked) and prepared-foods niches. Fresh fish sales have also risen (by 3.8%); tinned-fish sales have risen, but to a lesser extent (+1.2%). Decreasing consumption of frozen fish can be partially explained by rising consumption of prepared foods.
