Summary

WHILE THE HUNGARIAN FROZEN FOOD INDUSTRY DATES BACK TO THE EARLY FORTIES, SERIOUS DEVELOPMENT ONLY BEGAN IN THE LATE FIFTIES AND IN 1983 THE CONSUMPTION OF QUICK-FROZEN VEGETABLES, FRUIT AND PREPARED DISHES WAS 4.2 KG PER CAPITA. THE CONSUMPTION IS EXCEPTIONALLY HIGH IN BUDAPEST AND ITS SURROUNDING AREAS (8 TO 9 KG). THERE IS STILL A LACK OF COMMERCIAL REFRIGERATION EQUIPMENT IN THE STORES AND RETAIL SHOPS AND ONLY A SMALL PERCENTAGE OF HOUSEHOLDS OWN TWO-TEMPERATURE (FREEZER COMPART-MENT) REFRIGERATORS. THE FROZEN FOOD INDUSTRY HAS BEEN ABLE TO ENLARGE ITS RANGE OF PRODUCTS AND OFFER A WIDER CHOICE TO CONSUMERS. SINCE THE LIFTINGOF EXPORT RESTRICTIONS, HUNGARY IS NOW TRADING WITH NEARLY ALL THE EUROPEAN NATIONS AS WELL AS WITH THE MIDDLE EAST AND JAPAN.
