Summary
FROZEN STARTERS WERE PREPARED BY GROWING AND FREEZING UNCONCENTRATED INDIVIDUAL STRAINS IN A CONTROL MEDIUM AND STORING THE FROZEN CULTURES FOR 3 MONTHS, WITH AND WITHOUT A CRYOPROTECTANT. AT 253 K (-20 DEG C) STORAGE CERTAIN INDIVIDUAL STRAINS VARIED IN THEIR ABILITY TO SURVIVE AND THE ADDITION OF GLYCEROL SHOWED THAT CELL VIABILITY AND ACTIVITY CAN BE PRESERVED. THESE TWO LATTER CELL PROPERTIES CAN ALSO BE PRESERVED AT 253 AND 193 K (-40 AND -80 DEG C) STORAGE, WITHOUT CRYOPROCTECTANTS, IF THE STARTERS ARE GROWN IN A PHASE-4 CONTROL MEDIUM.
