CRYOPRESERVATION OF BLOOD HALTS METABOLISM AND PROLONGS THE TERM OF VALIDITY, IT DESTROYS LEUKOCYTES AND ELIMINATES THE HB ANTIGEN BY WASHING THE CELLS. THE METHOD USED FOR FREEZING RED BLOOD CELLS WAS ADDING GLYCEROL TO PACKED RED CELLS AND AFTER MIXING THOROUGHLY, THE BLOOD WAS STORED AT 188 K (-85 DEG C). THAWING WAS AT 310 K (37 DEG C) IN A WATER BATH. ATP, 2.3 DPG (DIPHOSPHATIDYL GLYCEROL) AND POST-TRANSFUSION SURVIVAL WERE THE SAME AS THAT FOR FRESH BLOOD.
