Summary

THE PAPER SURVEYS THE DANGERS OF CELL DETERIORATIONS DUE TO FREEZING AND DEALS WITH THE FREEZING OF PLATELETS, IN VITRO STUDIES AND IN VIVO TESTS. FREEZING IS DOMINATED BY THE PROBLEM OF SELECTING THE CRYOPROTECTIVE AGENT (DMSO AND GLYCEROL BEING THE MOST WIDELY USED) AND THE FREEZING TEMPERATURES; DMSO AND A TEMPERATURE OF 193 K (-80 DEGC) ARE PREFERRED. SURVIVAL SEEMS EQUAL TO THAT OF FRESH PLATELETS, BUT WITH A LOWER YIELD. LONG-TERM FROZEN STORAGE CAN BE ENVISAGED AT TWO LEVELS: EMERGENCY TREATMENT AND TREATMENT OF IMMUNOLOGICAL PROBLEMS. G.G.
