THE DEVELOPMENT OF FRUIT PACKING STATIONS IN FRANCE OVER THE PAST 30 YEARS HAS BEEN OUTSTANDING: VIRTUALLY NON-EXISTENT IN 1946, THESE ESTABLISHMENTS, WHICH HANDLE SORTING-SIZING-PACKAGING AND THE PRESERVATION OF FRUIT, CAN PRESENTLY OFFER A REFRIGERATED VOLUME OF 5.7 MILLION M3. THE ARTICLE ANALYSES THE SUCCESSIVE STAGES OF THIS DEVELOPMENT: (1) THE LAUNCH OUT IN 1947; (2) THE 1960-70 DECENNIAL CHARACTERISED BY A VERY RAPID GROWTH AND BY THE DEVELOPMENT OF STORAGE AS FROM 1965-67; (3) 1970-80 WAS A PERIOD OF MORE MODERATE EXPANSION AND A LARGE PROPORTION OF CONTROLLED ATMOSPHERE CHAMBERS (2.2 MILLION M3 TOTAL VOLUME).
