GAS-FUELED ENGINE-DRIVEN AIR CONDITIONING AND REFRIGERATION SYSTEMS FOR COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS.

Author(s) : LINDSAY B. B.

Summary

THE GAS-FUELED ENGINE-DRIVEN CHILLER PROVIDES A DUTY OF 500 KILOWATTS WITH A COP OF 1.4 AT THE CONDITIONS OF TOTAL LOAD. FURTHERMORE, THE HEAT OF THE ENGINE CAN BE RECOVERED TO SUPPLY AN ABSORPTION CHILLER, PROVIDING 123 FURTHER KILOWATTS OF REFRIGERATION AND INCREASING THE COP TO 1.75. THE UNIT IS COMPOSED OF A TWIN SCREW COMPRESSOR AND OF AN ADVANCED MICROPROCESSOR-CONTROLLED DEVICE. THE CHILLER WAS TESTED IN A HOSPITAL IN MANCHESTER FOR EVALUATING THE REAL OPERATION OF THE SYSTEM AND THE METHODS OF INSTALLATION. THE RESULTS OF THIS EXPERIMENT WERE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OFA NEW SIMPLIFIED DESIGN WITH AN IMPROVED PERFORMANCE. MARKET ASSESSMENTS AND ECONOMIC ANALYSES HAVE DEMONSTRATED THAT A HUGE POTENTIAL FOR GAS-FUELED ENGINE-DRIVEN COOLING SYSTEMS EXISTS, ESPECIALLY IN THE UNITED STATES, WHERE THE ELECTRICITY DEMAND CHARGES ARE HIGH. THEY CAN REDUCE THE PEAK ELECTRICITY DEMAND INCREASE AND MINIMIZE INVESTMENTS IN NEW GENERATION CAPACITIES.
