Global energy perspectives to 2050 and beyond.

Date: 1900.01.01

Summary

Summary of the key findings on global energy-related issues presented in the joint WEC/IIASA Report at the 16th WEC Congress, held in Tokyo, Japan, on October 8-13, 1995. This report indicates the effects of six scenarios, three assuming high growth in all regions, two with ecological priorities, and a compromise course. The former include one based on increased use of oil and gas, and one returning to coal. Ecological cases embrace nuclear power or renewable resources, both reducing greenhouse gas emissions. All cases presume links between growth, energy requirement and increased efficiency in fuel need and use. It is likely that development will change the orientation of energy policies from supply to consumer with increased grid distribution. Localised systems will grow as technology produces economic units. Oil will remain the primary energy for transport. The study concludes that to avoid increased greenhouse effect and pollution, policy changes must be initiated immediately. D.W.H.
