Global trends, design and safety requirements for ammonia installations.

Number: pap. n. 19

Summary

This paper is focussing on the use of ammonia in industrial applications. Ammonia has over decades shown its value, as an effective refrigerant, however the use of ammonia has also been challenged due to the fact that ammonia is classified a toxic fluid. During the last years the focus on the safety of large ammonia systems, has been intensified, and a in some countries, additional safety precautions are requested. Increased safety requirements or reduced ammonia charges, are two important methods to overcome these challenges. The development in the emerging countries clearly indicates that there is growing market for industrial systems in these regions, due to the expansion of the cold chain, and the need for environmental and sustainable solutions. Refrigerant systems has here traditional been designed with large ammonia charges. This paper contains an overview on trends and standards for safe and efficient design solutions, as well as effect of external surrounding factors as location and population density.
