The use of ammonia in new applications and markets.

Author(s) : PITT A. J.

Summary

With the demise of R22, and increasing environmental concern about the future of HFCs there is only one refrigerant which is guaranteed to serve the Building Services Industry at the start of the next century. Ammonia has significant capital cost advantages and energy advantages and it is being used extensively throughout Europe. To meet market needs, APV developed a range of water chillers with special features which overcome any concern over ammonia. These units were first installed at the new RAC Rescue Control Facility in August 1994. Similar units have also been supplied to customers in Denmark and Luxembourg. The first installation set a precedent in the United Kingdom and has demonstrated that tried and tested ammonia technology can be safely applied in commercial applications. It has proved that ammonia can compete and win against HFC based solutions. It offers a proven, commercial, long term solution to air conditioning applications and is available today.
