Ammonia refrigeration experience in the Scandinavian countries.

Author(s) : DANIG P. O.

Summary

Ammonia has been used as a refrigerant in Scandinavian countries for more than a hundred years. Traditionally ammonia has been used in dairies, breweries, slaughterhouses, and other industrial applications of refrigeration in the food industries. Code and regulations concerning use of ammonia in these systems are old and outdated except perhaps in Sweden. The paper gives an overview of the current situation and the expected developments in the field of standardisation, education, national codes etc. related to the use of ammonia as a refrigerant. A few case studies of accidents are discussed.
