GreenHouse project: reducing the emission of greenhouse gases by changing domestic consumption patterns.
Author(s) : NONHEBEL S.
Type of article: Article
Summary
Approximately one half of total domestic energy consumption is contained in the goods and services that households purchase or otherwise acquire. There seems to be a great difference in the energy requirement of comparable products. This means that relatively minor changes in consumers' purchasing behaviour can have a powerful influence on the domestic energy requirement. In this article, the stages through which each product passes before it reaches the consumer are determined. The energy consumed is determined for each stage and then calculated: energy during cultivation, transport, refining and in the store.
