THE HISTORY OF THE LOW TEMPERATURE CONCEPT IS OUTLINED FROM THE MIDDLE OF XVIII CENTURY TO 1908 WHEN H. KAMERLINGH-ONNES LIQUEFIED HELIUM. THE SCIENTIFIC AND ORGANIZATIONAL ACTIVITIES OF KAMERLINGH-ONNES RESULTED IN AN ADVENT AT THE BEGINNING OF THE XX CENTURY OF A NEW FIELD OF RESEARCH -THE LOW TEMPERATURE PHYSICS -AND THE FIRST GREAT SCIENTIFIC SCHOOL AT THE END OF THE XIX -THE TWENTIES OF THE XX CENTURY. THE PERSONNAL OF H. KAMERLINGH-ONNES' SCHOOL, THE SCIENTIFIC RESULTS OBTAINED BY THE SCHOOL AND THEIR IMPORTANCE IN THE SUBSEQUENT PROGRESS OF PHYSICS ARE PRESENTED.
