Heat pump technologies for space heating in Europe.

Author(s) : KÄMMER N.

Summary

The energy consumed in Europe for space heating in residential and commercial buildings is a significant fraction of Europe's total energy consumption. Heat pumps can play an important role to satisfy this demand while contributing to energy conservation. There are different heat sources available and different heating systems in use throughout the various European regions. Representative combinations of heat source and heating systems are discussed and typical values for energy efficiency are presented. The environmental benefits in terms of reduced CO2 emissions as well as reduced consumption of primary energy are assessed in relation to Europe's overall targets. In addition, the commercial viability of heat pumps as compared to heating schemes utilizing renewable energy sources is demonstrated.
