Heat pump technology: responding to new opportunities.

Summary

The paper provides an update on advanced heat pump R&D activities in the United States and Canada. These research programs in vapour compression technology are directed toward developing alternatives to hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC)-22 for heat pump and air-conditioning applications. The HCFC phaseout provides an opportunity to develop advanced refrigeration equipment for the new refrigerants with higher energy efficiency than current heat pump systems. Major manufacturers and government agencies are collaborating on research underway in both industry and government laboratories. Thermally activated heat pump technology programs include several cooperative early-commercialization activities involving gas-fired heat pumps and chillers being conducted by government, the HVAC industry, and gas utility companies.
