Summary

The use of heat pumps is restricted by high investment costs, although operating costs are much lower than those of traditional heating systems. Government assistance could promote the development of these heating and cooling systems, which are already common in the meat industry, the dairy product industry and the fruit and vegetable processing industry. Thermoelectric pumps have good prospects in research laboratories, in the health sector and in the field of military techniques. The cost of fuel and environmental protection are making heat pumps more attractive.
