Hot water heat pump with low-charge propane refrigerant.

Summary

In 2018, a hot water heat pump for family houses using R290 (propane) was developed and marketed. The unit had a 270 liter storage tank, 350 g of R290, an 8.8 cm3 reciprocating compressor, and a heating capacity of 1.5 kW. The appliance is supposed to be placed indoors, and a risk assessment requires a room of 7 m2 with a height of minimum 2 m. These requirements showed to be an obstacle for the sale of the unit.
A new project was started with the purpose of reducing the refrigerant charge of the unit to a maximum of 150 g of R290. This will eliminate the need for additional safety measures and the obstacles for selling the product.
In cooperation with a manufacturer of aluminium pipes, a new condenser profile has been developed and tested. The new profile reduces the inner volume of the condenser without compromising the heat transfer and the pressure drop in the condenser. In addition to that the energy efficiency of the new unit has increased. The condenser is wrapped around the storage tank, and the system is expected to be competitive on the market. Furthermore, it is expected that the new unit will be marketed in the near future.
