Summary
The French Electricity Company EDF made measurements on a new -35°C ice-slurry cooling system and on a direct-expansion system in a supermarket. The results of the measurements were compared with two theoretical systems with identical capacities: a single-phase secondary refrigerant system and a two-phase secondary CO2 refrigerant system. The comparison was made according to the following criteria: food safety, energy (COP), environmental impact (TEWI), economic criteria (initial investment, operation). The COP of the ice-slurry system was only 0.5. The COP of the two-phase CO2 system was 0.9. the ice-slurry system shows the best result in terms of direct greenhouse-gas effects (163 tonnes of CO2 eq.), but the worst in terms of indirect greenhouse gas effect and of TEWI (3791 tonnes of CO2 eq.). The energy efficiency of the low-temperature slurry should be improved if we want this technology to become one of the latest refrigeration technologies.
