Summary

The number of thermal storage systems installed in Japan has been growing steadily year by year with the encouragement of the electric utilities. By using off-peak electricity, these systems have significant benefits for energy consumption. A significant number of thermal storage systems now use ice as the storage medium. Ice thermal storage systems can provide a much larger cooling capacity per unit weight than conventional water thermal storage systems. Consequently, their limited storage tank volume makes them easier to install. Since most of these systems are reversible, the trend in their application plays an important role in the diffusion of heat pumps.
