INFLUENCE OF PICKING DATES ON THE FURTHER BEHAVIOUR OF < ROCHA > PEAR.

INFLUENCE DE LA DATE DE CUEILLETTE SUR LE COMPORTEMENT DE LA POIRE ROCHA.

Author(s) : AVELAR M. L.

Summary

THE AUTHOR STUDIED THE BEHAVIOUR OF ROCHA PEARS, DURING THEIR STORAGE AT 273 K (0 DEG C), IN RESPECT WITH DIFFERENT PICKING DATES. LATE HARVESTED FRUITS WERE MORE PRONE TO LOWER STORAGE LIFE, TO SCALD AND CORE BREAKDOWN THAN THOSE PICKED AT THE OPTIMUM DATE. THEIR COMMERCIAL AND ORGANOLEPTIC QUALITIES WERE THE BEST, THOUGH THEIR STORAGE LIFE FIRST ENDED ON DECEMBER. FRUITS HARVESTED AT OPTIMUM DATES WERE OF GOOD QUALITY TILL JANUARY AND RIPENED FROM 288 TO 293 K (15 TO 20 DEG C), AFTER TEN AND SEVEN DAYS. AS FOR THE FRUITS ISSUED FROM EARLY PICKINGS, THEY WERE OF BAD QUALITY AND SUSCEPTIBLE TO SHRIVELLING. THE AUTHOR PROPOSES THE USE OF SOME TESTS, EVALUATING FIRMNESS, STARCH CONTENT, DAYS AFTER FULL BLOOM AND COLOUR OF SEEDS, WITH THE PURPOSE OF DETERMINATING THE OPTIMUM DATE OF PICKING THIS PORTUGUESE CULTIVAR OF PEAR.
