Influence of refrigerant properties on compressor efficiency.

Summary

When comparing replacement refrigerants, the efficiency of the compressors needs to be assessed. Even when operating at the same temperatures, a compressor may have different efficiencies due to the differences in refrigerant properties. Two fundamental questions can be raised: for a given compressor and operating conditions, how do the refrigerant properties affect the efficiency, and for a given compressor and a refrigerant, how does the efficiency vary with operating conditions? This study aims at providing answers to these questions, investigating how the thermo-physical properties of different refrigerants influence the efficiency. A simple model for comparing efficiency of a reciprocating compressor has been developed. It is based on individual energy loss ratios between the compared refrigerants, given that the efficiency and proportions of individual losses of the baseline refrigerant are known. The use of the model is illustrated by comparing various natural refrigerants (propane, propylene, butane, isobutane and ammonia) with R22, R134a, R404A, R407C and R417A.
