Summary

The quantity of foods imported into Japan has reached 25 million tons a year and accounts for 54% of the food eaten by the Japanese people in terms of calories. The imports of processed foods have also increased in recent years, in addition to cereals and other items which have been imported in bulk as raw materials of processed foods. The article describes the role of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government in inspecting imported foods. It tells which imported foods, additives, radiation-treated foods, and pesticides residue are not permitted in Japan.
