Intracellular ice formation: causes and consequences.
Author(s) : KARLSSON J. O. M., CRAVALHO E. G., TONER M.
Type of article: Article, Review
Summary
The authors present a number of critical issues related to understanding intracellular ice formation and its implications in low temperature biology. By nature, these issues lie at the intersection of a wide spectrum of disciplines, including biology, chemistry, physics and engineering. The authors say why very little is known about the exact mechanism of intracellular ice formation and the nature of the cellular damage associated with intracellular ice formation. There are a multitude of physico-chemical changes associated with cell freezing. Measurements of the properties of cells and materials at low temperatures are scarce, making interpretation of experimental results difficult and mathematical models unreliable.
