Investigation into the viability of CHP in cold storage facilities.

Author(s) : PROSSER G., MAIDMENT G. G.

Summary

One application with high demand for both electricity and heat is cold storage. These facilities in the United Kingdom have an estimated storage volume of 2.56 million cubic metres, and are estimated to use up to 1537 GWh of electricity (DTI, 1996), 0.66% of the UK's annual consumption. A typical cold storage application is described in the paper. The electrical energy and heating requirements are defined and used to assess the viability of a CHP (combined heat and power) system using thermal and economic analysis. The pay-back periods for the CHP system for a number of different configurations are promising.
