Summary

For electric vehicles the heat demand during the cold season is crucial since only little waste heat is available for heating the passenger compartment. Resistance heating with PTC elements reduces significantly the cruising range of electric vehicles. The use of the A/C system as a heat pump is a much more energy efficient solution. However, in heat pump mode the frost formation on the exterior heat exchanger reduces the performance and efficiency of the system. A reversible cooling and heating system for an electric city car using CO2 as working fluid was measured under frosting conditions. This paper discusses the effects on the system behavior at the chosen operating conditions. In order to simulate the system behavior, a transient simulation model in Modelica, which can handle frost growth on a discretised heat exchanger, was adapted and compared to experimental data.
