Summary

Report of a Working Group Meeting convened by ICGFI, held in Washington, DC, March 22 to 25, 1994. It develops a set of principles and guidelines to facilitate acceptance and implementation of irradiation as a quarantine treatment of fresh produce as well as a detailed quality control programme. Specific recommendations to governments, industry and trade to facilitate implementation of the treatment are also made. Extract of contents: status of methyl bromide and of acceptance and application of food irradiation; effects on pest species and host commodities; principles and guidelines for irradiation as a quarantine treatment (fruits and vegetables: packers; irradiation facilities); issues influencing commercialization of irradiation as a quarantine treatment; conclusions and recommendations.
