Lego plant uses water as primary refrigerant.
Type of article: Article
Summary
The process is based on an open cycle, without physical separation between primary and secondary refrigerant, therefore there is no heat exchange surface. Water at 13.5 deg C enters the evaporator where it expands to around 11 mbar, corresponding to a saturation temperature of 8 deg C. Some 1% of the water evaporates, while the remaining 99% is chilled to 9 deg C. The evaporated water becomes the primary refrigerant. The water vapour is compressed in a two-stage turbo compressor system with intermediate cooler. In the condenser, the water vapour is condensed directly on the injected cooling tower water, which is thus heated 4 to 5 K to a temperature very close to the condensing temperature.
