Summary

The European Regulation on FGAS is driving the transition toward the substitution of HFC Refrigerants with gases with a lower Global W arming Potential. Among them, Refrigerant R290 (pr opan e) has near-to-zero GWP and is an excellent alternative to be used in residential air conditioners. The paper presents the application of Life Cycle Assessment methodology to evaluate the environmental impacts of a domestic air conditioner using propane as refrigerant gas, and to compare them to the impacts of a corresponding system using HFC.
The LCA study has a "cradle to grave" approach, considering the extraction of raw materials, manufacturing,  distribution, use and end-of-life of the air conditioner. Impacts have been assessed for two different reference flows: 1 unit of air conditioner in the whole life cycle and 1 kWh of thermal energy provided to/subtracted from the room.
A sensitivity analysis has been performed to evaluate how impacts change with different energy mixes and in case of gas leakage in the use phase.
