Life testing of hermetic compressor with various hydrocarbon grades and other alternatives to CFC-12.

Author(s) : DEVOTTA S., SAWANT N. N.

Summary

The life cycle testing of hermetic compressor was carried out with CFC-12 and with various alternatives to CFC-12. The alternatives studied are HFC-134a, R401A and various hydrocarbon grades. Mineral oil was used with CFC-12 and all HC grades whereas polyolester (POE) oil and alkylbenzene oil were respectively used with HFC-134a and R401A. It can be concluded that the hydrocarbon mixture is more compatible with the hermetic compressor materials than with CFC-12 and HFC-134a even under retrofit conditions. This gives an opportunity to retrofit appliances with the HC mixture without any concern for stability.
