Experimental and theoretical investigation of the alternate refrigerants R290 and R134a in consideration of the behaviour of a reciprocating compressor.

Author(s) : HAINBACH C., STEIMLE F.

Summary

Through detailed investigations and theoretical computations, it is shown that the use of pure propane (R290) in refrigerating plants designed for R134a or R12 does not yield the desired success. This conclusion is only valid, however, for the temperature range investigated. It can be concluded that the replacing of CFCs with a pure hydrocarbon or a mixture of hydrocarbons (e.g., propane-butane) is sensible from an energy point of view, if the refrigerant to be replaced has a similar vapour pressure. In addition, a dimensionless function for the behaviour of the compressor was developed.
