Summary
SAMPLES OF ISOLATED BRAIN FROM SNAILS LYMNAEA STAGNALIS L WERE FROZEN IN LIQUID NITROGEN VAPOUR AT A RATE OF 500 K/MIN IN THE PRESENCE OF 1.5 M DMSO, ETHYLENE GLYCOL OR FORMAMIDE. THE SAMPLES WERE THEN PLUNGED INTO LIQUID NITROGEN AND STORED FOR UP TO 2 MONTHS. THAWING WAS PERFORMED IN A WATER BATH AT 296 TO 298 K (23 TO 25 DEG C). TWO-THREE HOURS AFTER THAWING AND SUBSEQUENT INCUBATION IN PHYSIOLOGICAL SOLUTION, THE ELECTRICAL PARAMETERS FOR ISOLATED GIANT NEURONS (150 TO 200 MICROMETERS IN SIZE) WERE SIMILAR TO THOSE OF CONTROL ONES.
