Summary
The paper discusses suitable drop-in replacements for R22 and the design aspects and practical execution of a modern marine brine chiller intended for R22 and its substitutes. The chiller, which is factory-assembled and tested prefabricated unit, has been specially designed for easy conversion to new refrigerants. The distinguishing features of the unit are: small refrigerant charge, direct expansion evaporator and compact, easily supervised and served refrigerant circuit. The refrigerant charge is approximately one third of that required in a conventional brine installation with flooded evaporators.
