Measuring data and experiences from the Netherlands. Two real cases of applications of absorption heat pumps: gas-fired absorption heat pumps with different sources.
Author(s) : SCHILT R.
Summary
Since 2003 almost 400 renovated dwellings of housing associates in Haarlem are equipped with a unique sustainable heating system for space heating and domestic hot water. This system exists of 3.000 m2 solar collectors, 16 gas-fired absorption heat pumps (40 kWth each), a long term underground energy storage (45°C) and sophisticated stratified buffers for short term heat storage. This quite complicated concept offers, at least in theory, an energy reduction of 70% compared to previously existing situation (i.e. atmospheric gas boiler). Since 2009 an existing home for the elderly of Respect Zorggroep in The Hague is equipped with five gas fired absorption heat pumps on outside air. The system is quite simple. There is integrated system made up by gas fired heat pumps (to save energy) and central gas fired boiler (to cope with peak power) to deliver space heating and DWH service. This solution allows to achieve optimal efficiencies (energy savings, CO2 reduction) and high return on investment. The energy reduction, in theory, is estimated to be approx. 27% on only space heating. Actual data and real experience will be reported as well. The purpose of this paper is to document the experiences and the real energy savings of the both concepts. The main conclusion is that theoretical energy reductions are achievable in an ideal situation, but that in practice high sophisticated systems rarely deliver what design papers promised. On the one hand, this can be explained by the complicated way these systems are designed in order to achieve the utmost maximum. On the other hand, this can be explained by the ignorance to optimize and fine tune the control systems during a whole winter and summer season.
