Microbial and engineering characteristic numbers for process evaluation.

Author(s) : ZWIETERING M.

Summary

Process engineering and microbial models can be combined to simulate processes and to derive characteristic numbers. Quantification provides for an order of magnitude of the effect of various variables. Characteristic numbers can be used to get indices for processes and sum the possible instruments to influence the process. These numbers can be derived by combining balances with simple kinetics. In this paper various characteristic numbers for micro-organisms (in relation to product characteristics) and processes are shown and their interpretation and practical use are given.
