Microchannel heat exchangers as a design option for charge reduction in NH3 and HC systems.

Author(s) : HRNJAK P.

Summary

The paper presents microchannel heat exchangers as the option for significant charge reduction with the emphasis on the systems with NH3 and HCs. The experimental results from a prototype ammonia chiller with an air-cooled condenser and a plate evaporator are presented as an illustration. The main objectives were charge reduction and compactness of the system. The charge of the system is reduced to 18 g/kW. This prototype was made and examined in the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Center at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. New systems with propane as the refrigerant are under investigation.
