Developments in charge reduction and microchannel technology: mass flux as a way to affect void fraction-charge.

Author(s) : HRNJAK P.

Summary

This paper presents an overview of the reasons for charge reduction in air-conditioning and refrigeration systems, determination of adequate charge and discusses strategies for charge reduction: in heat exchangers, compressors (oil), and pipes. The focus is on heat exchangers, microchannel in particular. In addition to trivial reduction of internal volume as a strategy for charge reduction the focus is on effect of mass flux on void fraction and needed manipulation of circuiting. Two examples of extremely low inventory systems presented earlier, one with propane (R290) and the other, ammonia (R717) air cooled chiller are mentioned, while new low charge ammonia chiller with hermetic compressor is presented.
