Molecular sizes of lichen ice nucleation sites determined by gamma radiation inactivation analysis.

Type of article: Article
Summary
The experiment was undertaken to determine the molecular sizes of ice nuclei in a lichen (Rhizoplaca chrysoleuca) and to compare them to those of a bacteria (Pseudomonas syringae). Gamma rays inactivation analysis was used. The bigger a molecule is, the bigger is the likelihood, for the molecule, to be inactivated by the gamma rays. Preparation of samples is described. Results are given and are in agreement with ice nucleation theory which states that the size of ice nucleation sites increases logarithmally as the temperature of nucleation increases linearly.
