THE AUTHOR INTRODUCES PRESENT KNOWLEDGE ON THE ACTION OF CERTAIN BACTERIA, PARTICULARLY ABLE TO INTERRUPT THE NATURAL SUPERCOOLING OF WATER AT TEMPERATURES SLIGHTLY LOWER THAN 273 K (0 DEG C). HE SUMS UP HISTORY ON THIS DISCOVERY, ENUMERATES THE SPECIES INVOLVED AND EXPLAINS WHAT IS KNOWN TODAY ABOUT THE MECHANISM OF THIS ACTION ON PLANTS. HE PARTICULARLY DESCRIBES THE ROLE OF PSEUDOMONAS SYRINGAE IN SPRING FROSTING AND THE MEANS OF COMBATTING THIS PHENOMENON AND FINALLY EXAMINES APPLICATIONS WHICH CAN TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE PHENOMENON.
