Summary

A computational analysis of the dynamic mode of operation of a vertical cylindrical cold storage vessel is presented. The aim of the study is to verify the ability of a simple lumped model (fully mixed) to reproduce dynamic responses of the storage vessel under variable inlet temperature. As a reference data for assessments results of the virtual 3D CFD experiments are taken. A special attention is given to the dynamic characteristic of the vessel being a part of an indirect cooling system and working under the specific operating conditions. Based on the comparative analysis of the obtained results it can be concluded that application of the fully mixed model provides a computationally efficient alternative to the much more time consuming three-dimensional CFD simulations. The consistency is especially attractive due to the planned interfacing of the cold storage model with a computer scheme controlling entire indirect cooling system.
