OPTIMIZATION OF DRY EXPANSION AIR COOLERS.

Author(s) : BRENDENG E.

Summary

THE DRY EXPANSION AIR COOLER IS SIMPLE, PROVIDES AUTOMATIC OIL RETURN TO THE COMPRESSOR AND IS EASILY DEFROSTED. HOWEVER, THIS TYPE OF FEEDING HAS SOME DRAWBACKS DUE TO THE HEAT TRANSFER PROCESS BETWEEN THE REFRIGERANT AND INTERNAL TUBE WALLS AND TO THE BEHAVIOUR OF THE THERMOSTATIC EXPANSION TOESTABLISH SATISFACTORY DISTRIBUTION OF THE REFRIGERANT IN THE DIFFERENT BANKS IS DIFFICULT. THE EFFICIENCY OF THE THERMOSTATIC EXPANSION VALVES IS STRONGLY AFFECTED BY THE CONDENSATION PRESSURE. LOCAL HEAT TRANSFER COEFFICIENT AND PRESSURE DROP INCREASE WITH THE MASS FLOW RATE OF THE REFRIGERANT IN THE EVAPORATOR. IT IS POSSIBLE TO OPTIMIZE THE OVERALL LENGTH OF TUBES IN EACH CIRCUIT, THUS OBTAINING A MAXIMUM HEAT TRANSFER COEFFICIENT FOR A GIVEN LOGARITHMIC MEAN TEMPERATURE DIFFERENCE (LMTD). IF THE LMTD VALUE VARIES TO A LARGE EXTENT, AN ELECTRONIC EXPANSION VALVE GIVES A BETTER EFFICIENCY THAN THE CONVENTIONAL THERMOSTATIC EXPANSION VALVE.
