Options to replace R22.

Author(s) : FLOHR F., MEURER C.

Summary

Due to the phase out of virgin HCFC by the EU2037/200 for maintenance of A/C and refrigeration systems the discussion restarted about the proper substitution of R22. Despite its ban in most new applications since 2000, R22 is still the most used refrigerant in the EU. This paper gives an overview about the wide variety of R22 applications. Depending on the applications and their surroundings a guideline is defined for the best strategy to fulfill the operator's needs on its R22 equipped system. Different options to replace R22 in their typical application area are investigated and evaluated. Under certain circumstances, drop-in refrigerants offer a promising solution for systems which have to be maintained without recycled R22 or can't be retrofitted to a chlorine-free refrigerant respectively. During the last years several new types of refrigerant blends are serving these applications. The paper summarizes the latest refrigerant developments in this respect regarding their typical application area and their basic thermophysical data. A new refrigerant type from Solvay for low-temperature purposes is discussed.
