Summary
Product specifications and evaluation test methods used for refrigeration lubricants are described. There are two product specifications globally, the Japanese JIS K2211 and the German DIN 51503-1. Other properties such as refrigerant solubility, chemical stability, and lubricity are also very important factors for the design of lubricants. Some typical test methods are presented. The author briefly introduces the history of the development and the current status of refrigeration lubricants for HFCs and natural working fluids. Refrigeration lubricants are generally tailor-made products, and it is very difficult to exchange technical information among competitors. In the paper, the properties of the products on the market from the major suppliers are shown.
